Selfishness vs Selflessness

“Self” in two words have completely different meanings and actions. Selfishness versus Selflessness. They are definitely polar opposites! In researching the meanings, selfishness will have one to put their own personal needs and desires first above others regardless of the impact it may have. Selflessness will have one to take the needs and desires of others first before their own.

Just to name a few, there are positive examples of showing selfishness, such as self-caring, self-preserving, self-reliant, self-assured, self-respecting and self-sufficient. Also, we hear over and over again, a flight attendant advising to use an oxygen mask on yourself first before saving someone else. Then there’s the flip side, which can lead to sin, broken relationships and spiritual consequences.

The ultimate example of selflessness is the love of Jesus Christ sacrificing himself for humanity’s salvation! Also, look at Ruth’s loyalty to Naomi, Abraham’s hospitality to three visitors without expecting anything in return, the widow’s offering (mite), Moses’ intercession for the Israelites, Paul’s ministry while enduring persecution and hardship, as well as Esther’s bravery to risk her life to save her people from death.

Truly what is so bothersome is to witness firsthand selfishness in someone who feels it’s normal behavior and yet blame others for reacting to their action. Human nature is so complex. I need to keep in mind that my normal is not someone else’s normal. However, common sense should be the same for us all. My full disclosure, facial expressions will be displayed while I’m sure my mouth may end up filling in the gaps.

We can go back and forth with reasons as to why someone would choose selfishness versus selflessness. In looking at them both there are positive aspects, even if one can be negative. I pray that we will one day also show selflessness-like actions towards others. Life is too short otherwise.

Be Kept!
