Because I’m a Nurse!
Because I’m a nurse….
I wake before the alarm sounds off. It may be the anticipation of the day ahead, I can’t turn my thoughts off, I’m planning the day ahead or remembering what I did the day before. I may be a human record player, replaying the same day over and over, trying to make any adjustments to the end. I’m mentally, physically and spiritually preparing myself to care more for others than I do myself. I will listen to every word shared by my patient because somewhere buried deep in their conversation is valuable information needed for me to provide adequate care for you. I’m pulled in several directions while maintaining my sanity (or what’s left of it), keeping my game face on point, remaining calm and not fall behind on my duties. I try to maintain a smile my face or be mindful of my countenance because my presence will help set the tone for this visit and any continued interactions between us.
Because I’m a nurse….
I accept that you’re having a bad day and may have a short fuse because of the logistics of administrative paperwork. However, please allow me to do my job safely, to avoid any additional paperwork for documenting any errors or adverse reactions. I will call you if you’re late for an appointment to verify if you’re coming, because you may be lost, not feeling well or ran into some unforeseen circumstances. Therefore, if you answer the phone with an attitude as if I bothered you or interrupted your day, please forgive me for checking on with you. Just keep in mind the surgeon or provider has also asked this nurse to follow up with you. I understand the facility is a bit cool, it’s a temperature setting that needs to be maintained in order to control the spread of bacteria, so if I look as though I’ve been running a marathon and sweating profusely, I have. The coldness hasn’t caught up with me.
Because I’m a nurse….
I’m with you during the most vulnerable time of your life. I will see you at a high point and low point. I will laugh with you and shed a tear with you. I will treat you the way I would want to be treated, protecting your privacy and being your advocate. I will be as gentle as possible, providing as much comfort as needed to ensure you’re strong enough to be discharge and able to care of yourself. I will not enable you and I do not sugarcoat healthcare. I love being a nurse and I love that God has blessed me to be a blessing to you. If this is what God has in store for me to serve as a nurse, then I will continue to give thanks!
1 Thessalonians 2; 7 But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children
Luke 9;2 And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.
Proverbs 17; 22 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine; but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
Galatians 6;9 And let us not be weary in well doing; for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
BE KEPT!
