More than salt & pepper

The joy of cooking is an expression of one’s love language towards others. The thrill of looking for and trying new dishes to entice and bring tastebuds to life. The presentation of these dishes are elegant, showing precise and well thought out planning to appeal to the recipient. The facial expressions are satisfied and thankful. Bellies are full. The plates are clear, not even a crumb to spare. Now you’re ready for a nap.

It’s the beginning steps of the meal preparation that intrigues me. How many will be eating? Do I need to make any substitutions to the ingredients? Do I need to make a grocery run? Now either I have the recipe memorized or read the recipe word for word. Paying close attention to the exact measurement of each specific ingredient and what kind of seasonings will be needed. I’m the kind of cook who will clean as I go because don’t like to have a lot of mess around when cooking. Not to mention I may end up reusing utensils or dishes, so cleaning as I go is essential.

The seasonings play a major role with the aroma and taste, at least in my opinion. It’s more than salt and pepper. I love to choose which seasoning will be the base flavor for the protein and then build on that flavor. Having it all come together for a tasty meal. The entire house smells delightful, having everyone begin to migrate to the kitchen with anticipation. Then, I can present my expression of love to everyone!

Just like the different spices used, each of us is a different flavor enriched with a little bit of zest. There’s none like the other. Even twins have differences. We all are more than salt and pepper. Each of us have a different story, a different path, a different view and a different outcome. It’s amazing when individuals come together sharing and expressing a healthy relationship that cultivates unity, not expecting anything in return. One does not feel superior to the other. No judgement. No retribution.

There’s more to life than salt and pepper. There’s more to US when we look beyond what’s on the outside. Definitely do not judge the book by its cover. Be the aroma others want to savor. This was inspired by a healthy conversation among friends from different backgrounds and a love for humanity.
